Marco Silva is edging closer to becoming Benfica’s new head coach, with reports suggesting talks between the two parties have advanced significantly in recent days.
The Portuguese manager’s contract with Fulham expires this month, and although the Premier League club have offered him a new deal, he has yet to commit his future to Craven Cottage.
Benfica Search For Mourinho Successor
Benfica are in the market for a new manager following Jose Mourinho’s departure to Real Madrid.
Mourinho left the Lisbon club after a single season and has signed a three-year contract to begin a second spell in charge of the Spanish giants. Benfica have identified Silva as their preferred candidate, with an agreement believed to be close.
Impressive Fulham Spell Nearing Its End
Silva joined Fulham in July 2021 and immediately guided the club back to the Premier League after winning promotion from the Championship.
Since returning to the top flight, Fulham have established themselves as a competitive Premier League side under the 48-year-old’s leadership. The London club finished 11th in the league last season, collecting 52 points and ending level with Chelsea.
Return To Portugal On The Horizon
A move to Benfica would mark Silva’s return to Portuguese football after several successful years in England.
Before arriving at Fulham, Silva managed Hull City, Watford and Everton, building a reputation for attacking football and strong squad development.
With negotiations progressing positively, Benfica appear increasingly confident of appointing Silva as their next manager, while Fulham may soon begin the search for a successor to one of the club’s most successful modern-day coaches.
