London: Organisers of the London Marathon are exploring the possibility of staging the race across two days in 2027 after an unprecedented surge in global interest.
The move comes following a record 1.1 million applications in the public ballot for the 2026 edition — a 36% increase from the previous year — underlining the race’s status as one of the world’s most sought-after running events.
While no final approval has been granted, officials confirmed that discussions are underway with stakeholders to expand participation and enhance the experience for runners and the host city. Event organisers emphasised that their immediate focus remains on delivering a memorable 2026 race, scheduled for April 26.
A spokesperson said the marathon continues to explore “innovative ways” to accommodate more participants while ensuring positive benefits for London. The idea of a two-day format is being considered as part of long-term planning, potentially allowing tens of thousands more runners to take part.
Interest in the race has grown dramatically in recent years.
The 2025 edition saw a record 56,640 finishers, with 57,449 starters, meaning only around 5% of applicants for 2026 are expected to secure a place. Reports suggest that a one-off two-day event could accommodate up to 100,000 runners over a weekend.
Support for the proposal has also emerged from City Hall. A spokesperson for London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the capital remains a global sporting hub and that the mayor looks forward to working with organisers and partners to explore whether a two-day format could be feasible.
If approved, the expanded format would mark a significant evolution for the iconic race, potentially opening the door for thousands more runners while reinforcing London’s reputation as one of the world’s premier marathon destinations.
