Lionel Messi is hours away from setting foot in India for what is being described as one of the most ambitious and star-studded sporting tours the country has ever hosted. From Kolkata to Hyderabad, Mumbai to New Delhi, the football icon’s packed three-day itinerary promises parades, matches, charity events, youth clinics, celebrity appearances, and even a meeting with the Prime Minister.
This marks Messi’s second visit to India, 14 years after he last mesmerised Kolkata in 2011. That memory still breathes in the city’s football-soaked streets — and now, the wait for his return has turned into a celebration.
Kolkata: A City Ready to Welcome Its King
Messi will begin his India journey in the city that worships football with its heart — Kolkata. Anticipation has surged to unprecedented levels as the Argentine maestro is set to land at around 1.30 a.m. on December 13.
A spectacular tribute awaits him in the form of a 70-foot statue, ‘Monumento de Messi’, crafted by artist Monti Pal. It will be virtually unveiled at Sreebhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, where crowds have already begun gathering.
Later, Messi will be felicitated at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, in an event expected to feature West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sourav Ganguly and Shah Rukh Khan. Cultural performances and celebrations have been lined up before Messi holds a special coaching clinic for young footballers.
Hyderabad: Exhibition Match, Parade and Royal Welcome
Following the Kolkata events, Messi will head to Hyderabad under Z-category security arrangements. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, he will take part in an exhibition match alongside Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Thousands are expected to attend what will be Messi’s first football appearance on Indian soil during this tour.
The city will then host a grand parade featuring Messi, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, followed by a felicitation function. His Hyderabad schedule concludes with a private meet-and-greet at the regal Falaknuma Palace

Mumbai: Charity, Bollywood and a Star-Studded Sporting Day
Mumbai will greet Messi the next morning with a high-glamour, charity-driven agenda. A special fashion show will feature Bollywood stars such as John Abraham, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Jackie Shroff. One of Messi’s prized Qatar 2022 memorabilia pieces will be auctioned for charity during the event.
At the Cricket Club of India, Sachin Tendulkar and other cricket icons will join him for a friendly padel match. A celebrity football game featuring leading actors is also planned. Messi will then hold a coaching session at Wankhede Stadium for 60 children — a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the young participants.
New Delhi: Youth Felicitation and a Meeting with the Prime Minister
The final leg of Messi’s India tour takes him to New Delhi. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, he will attend a special felicitation ceremony for Minerva Academy players who recently won three European youth titles. Two coaching clinics for children are also part of the schedule.
Messi’s India journey will conclude with a high-profile meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, completing a tour that blends sport, culture, charity and diplomacy.
Messi’s whirlwind four-city visit is poised to become a historic chapter in India’s sporting narrative — one where the world’s greatest footballer reconnects with the nation that has loved him for over a decade.
