Bangladesh created history on Sunday by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test at Marrara Oval, securing their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil and only their second win against the top-ranked side.

After Bangladesh took a commanding 228-run first-innings lead, Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a five-wicket haul to dismiss Australia for 284 in their second innings, leaving the visitors with a modest target of 57.

Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque then calmly completed the chase in just 14.2 overs, triggering celebrations among the Bangladesh players and travelling supporters.

Mehidy Breaks Australia’s Resistance

Australia resumed the fourth day at 161-4, with Cameron Green and Alex Carey attempting to rebuild the innings.

Mehidy, who had already dismissed Steve Smith late on the third day, struck repeatedly to dismantle Australia’s lower order.

He removed Carey for 30, Beau Webster for five and Pat Cummins for eight before claiming his fifth wicket when Nathan Lyon was trapped leg before wicket.

Mehidy finished with figures of 5-66 as Australia were bowled out for 284.

Green Hits Century In Vain

Cameron Green provided Australia’s biggest resistance, scoring 104 from 201 balls for his third Test century and first on home soil.

He reached the landmark from 192 balls, striking four boundaries and a six, before Hasan Mahmud dismissed him for 104 with a delivery that kept low.

Green’s century helped Australia avoid an innings defeat but could not prevent Bangladesh from completing their historic chase.

Bangladesh Dominates After Australia Struggles

Australia were bowled out for just 198 in their first innings after Pat Cummins elected to bat.

Steve Smith top-scored with 71, but Bangladesh capitalised as the pitch became easier for batting, posting 426 to establish a 228-run advantage.

Tanzid Hasan’s century was crucial to Bangladesh’s first-innings total, while Mehidy also contributed a valuable half-century.

Australia’s second-innings resistance ultimately proved insufficient.

First Win In Australia

The victory is Bangladesh’s first in a Test on Australian soil and only their second overall against Australia, following their maiden triumph in Dhaka in 2017.

The result also ranks among Australia’s most embarrassing home defeats in their 149-year Test history and is likely to raise questions over selection ahead of the second Test.

The teams will meet again in Mackay, Queensland, from August 22 as Australia attempt to level the two-Test series.

For Bangladesh, however, the Darwin victory marks a landmark moment in the country’s Test cricket history.
