Bangladesh’s achievement becomes even more notable considering the lengthy gap between their appearances in Australia.
First Asian Win Since 1995
The Darwin result also ended a remarkable run for Australia.
Before Bangladesh’s victory, Pakistan were the last Asian team other than India to win a Test in Australia, doing so in 1995.
That meant Bangladesh became the first Asian side outside India in 31 years to defeat Australia in a home Test.
India have traditionally enjoyed the greatest success among Asian teams in Australia, winning historic Test series in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
Bangladesh’s Second-Biggest Win
The nine-wicket victory ranks as Bangladesh’s second-biggest Test win by wickets.
Their biggest remains the 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024.
The Darwin triumph therefore joins one of the most memorable results in Bangladesh’s Test history and further underlines the team’s progress away from home.
Only Second SENA Victory
Bangladesh’s victory in Darwin was also just their second Test win in the traditional SENA countries — South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.
Their first came in Mount Maunganui in 2022, when Bangladesh stunned New Zealand by eight wickets.
The latest victory shows that the team is becoming increasingly capable of producing major results outside familiar home conditions.
Second Win Over Australia
The Darwin triumph was Bangladesh’s second Test victory over Australia in seven meetings.
Their first came in Mirpur in 2017, when Mushfiqur Rahim’s side defeated Australia by 20 runs.
That victory was achieved on home soil. The latest one, however, carries even greater significance because it came in Australia and against a side accustomed to dominating visiting teams.
Complete Team Performance
Bangladesh’s victory was built on contributions across departments.
Hasan Mahmud set the tone with the ball, while Tanzid Hasan provided an important batting contribution during Bangladesh’s commanding first innings.
Najmul Hossain Shanto also made valuable runs before Mehidy Hasan Miraz completed Australia’s collapse in the second innings.
Mehidy claimed five wickets as Australia were bowled out for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a target of only 57.
Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque then completed the chase in just 14.2 overs to seal a landmark nine-wicket victory.
For Bangladesh, Darwin was not merely another Test win. It was a statement that their cricket has evolved enough to challenge established powers on their own territory — and one of the biggest overseas victories in their history.
