The UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships will begin in Kanpur on Sunday with around 1,900 players, including nearly all of India’s leading senior men and women, competing across 12 categories.

The championships are being held amid uncertainty surrounding the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), which was suspended by the Sports Ministry on Wednesday, citing reasons including its failure to conduct elections within the stipulated timeframe.

TTFI Suspension Overshadows Championships

The TTFI has maintained that it enjoys autonomy under the Olympic Charter and has urged the Sports Ministry to keep the suspension order in abeyance and reconsider the decision.

Despite the administrative controversy, preparations for the national championships have continued as scheduled.

The tournament will feature around 4,200 matches over eight days, covering group stages through the knockout rounds.

The first group matches in the Under-11 and Under-13 boys’ and girls’ categories began on Saturday.

Top Players Set For Action

The senior competition will feature almost all of India’s top-ranked men and women players, with Harmeet Desai the notable absentee.

The men’s and women’s singles competitions are expected to draw the most attention, with the knockout stages likely to produce intense contests involving established players and emerging youngsters.

The younger age groups will also provide an important platform for India’s next generation of paddlers.

The Under-11 players will get an opportunity to gain competitive experience, while the Under-13 and Under-15 categories will offer a glimpse of the country’s developing talent.

The Under-17 and Under-19 events are expected to produce particularly strong competition as players look to establish themselves ahead of senior-level challenges.

Eight Days Of Competition

The championships will bring together players across 12 categories, creating one of the country’s largest domestic table tennis competitions.

The competition department will use Stag equipment throughout the event, including 24 tables, flooring and balls.

With India’s leading players competing alongside a large pool of promising youngsters, the Kanpur championships will provide a major test of the country’s table tennis depth even as the sport’s governing body faces an administrative crisis.
