John Mitchell has named a 38-player England women’s rugby union team squad for the Women’s Six Nations, featuring seven uncapped players as preparations begin for a new cycle.

Among those awaiting their first caps are Millie David and Sarah Parry, both rewarded for strong domestic performances. The inclusion of young talent signals a shift towards building depth following last year’s Rugby World Cup triumph.

Mitchell described the upcoming campaign as a “fresh start”, with a focus on competition and new combinations within the squad.

Key absences reshape the squad
England are without several experienced names. Former captain Zoe Stratford and Abbie Ward are unavailable due to pregnancy, while Emily Scarratt and Abby Dow have retired.

Injuries have also ruled out Jade Shekells and Ella Wyrwas, although both could return later in the tournament.

These absences have opened the door for younger players to step up, particularly in the forward pack and backline.

Opportunities across the squad
Players like Haineala Lutui have earned selection after impressive club form, while positional switches have also played a role, with Annabel Meta included after transitioning to loosehead prop.

Mitchell has also strengthened his second-row options by promoting emerging talents such as Christiana Balogun and Demelza Short.

The squad blends youth with experience, with senior players expected to guide the new entrants through the competition.

Six Nations campaign begins soon
England will begin their title defence against Ireland women’s rugby union team on 11 April. The match is set to draw a record crowd, highlighting the growing popularity of the women’s game.

With a seven-title winning streak on the line, the Red Roses will aim to maintain their dominance while integrating the next generation of talent.

The tournament will also serve as a key step in building towards the 2029 Rugby World Cup.
