The Senegal national football team have strongly reacted after being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations title, with officials insisting the battle is “far from over” following a controversial decision by Confederation of African Football.
CAF overturned Senegal’s 1-0 final win against Morocco national football team and awarded the match 3-0 to Morocco, citing Senegal’s player walk-off during stoppage time as the reason for forfeiture.
Senegal to challenge decision legally
The Senegalese Football Federation has confirmed it will appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, calling the verdict unfair and damaging to African football’s credibility.
Officials argue the decision lacks a legal basis and have vowed to pursue justice. Federation leaders stressed that Senegal will continue the fight through all available legal channels.
Controversial final sparks dispute
The drama unfolded when Senegal players walked off the pitch after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review. The match was delayed before play resumed, with Brahim Diaz missing the spot-kick and Pape Gueye later scoring the winner in extra time.
Despite completing the match, CAF ruled the walk-off constituted a breach of regulations, leading to the reversal of the result.
Players and officials stand firm
Several Senegal players, including Idrissa Gueye, have publicly backed the federation, insisting their on-field achievement cannot be erased. Some have even suggested they will not return their winners’ medals.
The incident has also drawn attention from International Football Association Board, which is reviewing rules regarding teams leaving the field in protest.
With tensions high and legal proceedings looming, the dispute threatens to become one of the most controversial episodes in recent African football history.
