Kasper Schmeichel has admitted he may have played his final match after suffering a severe shoulder injury, casting doubt over his future with Celtic FC and in professional football.
The 39-year-old goalkeeper, who last featured in February, is set to undergo two surgeries and faces a lengthy recovery period that could extend up to a year.
Injury puts future in doubt
Schmeichel revealed the extent of the damage, including a torn bicep, rotator cuff, and labrum, along with a dislocated shoulder. The seriousness of the injury means a return to top-level football is uncertain, especially given his age.
He also confirmed he will miss Denmark’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers play-off clash against North Macedonia national football team.
Determined to fight back
Despite the grim prognosis, Schmeichel remains determined to attempt a comeback. He described the possibility of returning as one of the greatest challenges of his career and vowed to commit fully to rehabilitation.
The former Leicester City FC goalkeeper has enjoyed a long and successful career, including a historic Premier League title win in 2016.
Emotional moment for family
His father, Peter Schmeichel, also shared his concern, saying he does not want his son’s career to end in such circumstances. He highlighted the difficulty of recovering from a shoulder injury as a goalkeeper.
With his contract nearing its end and recovery uncertain, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Schmeichel can make one final return to the pitch.
