Thomas Tuchel has named an expanded 35-man England national football team squad, with uncapped duo James Garner and Jason Steele receiving their first senior call-ups.
The announcement comes as Tuchel finalises his plans ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with this being his penultimate squad selection before the tournament.
Fresh faces rewarded for consistency
Midfielder Garner has impressed for Everton this season, while goalkeeper Steele earns recognition for his performances at Brighton & Hove Albion. Their inclusion reflects Tuchel’s intent to test squad depth and reward consistent club form.
The extended squad provides an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim as England continue preparations for the World Cup.
Experienced names return to the fold
There are notable recalls for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United, while Fikayo Tomori returns to the squad for the first time since 2018.
Up front, Dominic Calvert-Lewin makes a comeback after more than five years, and Dominic Solanke earns his first call-up since October 2024.
Key absentees and injury concerns
However, there are some high-profile omissions. Trent Alexander-Arnold is left out, along with Alex Scott.
Injuries have ruled out Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah, both of whom featured in the previous squad.
Friendlies set for final assessment
England will continue their preparations with friendlies at Wembley Stadium against Uruguay national football team on 27 March and Japan national football team on 31 March.
These matches are expected to play a crucial role in shaping Tuchel’s final squad as he looks to fine-tune his team ahead of the World Cup.
