Llanelli, Wales — In a thrilling United Rugby Championship (URC) showdown at Parc y Scarlets, the Scarlets pulled off a remarkable late victory, beating Ulster 27–22 in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
The Welsh side looked solid early on. Fly-half Sam Costelow opened the scoring with a penalty, giving the Scarlets an early edge. Wales internationals Blair Murray and Josh Macleod both slotted tries in the first half, helping Scarlets take control before the break.
Ulster, however, weren’t to be dismissed. The Irish province — starting the day well placed in the URC table — fought back with relentless pressure and closed the gap in the second half. At one stage it seemed Ulster might pull ahead late, especially after a Nathan Doak penalty narrowed the score to 22-20.
Yet the defining moment came after the clock had already gone red. From a well-worked Scarlets lineout, the ball was spread wide, and winger Ellis Mee took advantage of a gap to race 50 metres downfield and touch down under the posts — scoring what turned out to be the winning try.
“You don’t get many finishes like that,” a jubilant Scarlets supporter said as the final whistle blew. “It’s the kind of rugby you come to see — see-saw, tense, and then electric at the end.”
Scarlets’ grit paid off — despite Ulster’s fightback, the hosts kept their composure when it mattered most.
Ellis Mee’s breakaway try will be remembered as one of the most dramatic moments of the URC weekend.
Ulster’s performance shows they’re strong contenders, even in defeat, as they continue their push in the league.
