Biel, Switzerland : In a move that has caught tennis fans by surprise, India’s Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal has chosen the young and towering Dhakshineshwar Suresh for the singles lineup against Switzerland in the World Group I tie. The 22-year-old Madurai native, known for his big serve and flat hitting, impressed the Indian camp during practice on the fast indoor courts of Biel and earned his spot to open the tie against world No. 155 Jerome Kym.
Rajpal explained, “Dhakshineshwar’s game suits these courts perfectly. His height and serve can make a big difference here.” This choice reflects Rajpal’s confidence in the young player’s recent form, including multiple title wins on the ITF tour, and his readiness to compete at the highest level. The second singles spot will be filled by the experienced Sumit Nagal, who faces Marc Andrea Hüsler.
An interesting fact about this tie is India’s historical edge over Switzerland in Davis Cup encounters, leading 2-1 overall, with the last win dating back to 1993 in Kolkata. Also noteworthy is the absence of doubles specialist Yuki Bhambri, sidelined by injury, which forced the team to rely on the doubles pair Rithvik Bollipalli and N Sriram Balaji for the crucial rubber.
This tie is more than just a battle on court – it is a test of India’s depth, youth, and adaptability as they aim to progress toward next year’s Davis Cup Qualifiers. Rajpal’s bold lineup decision shows India’s hunger and strategic planning in one of the tennis season’s most prestigious team events.
“Every decision was about performance and potential,” the captain remarked, “We are ready to fight hard for every point.” Indian tennis fans will be watching eagerly as the team looks to write a new chapter in their Davis Cup journey.
