For Tanu Sharma, the road to the U20 World Championships podium was built on more than wrestling talent. It was shaped by a sporting family that backed her ambition, a coach who spotted her potential early, and years of training that finally produced a major international breakthrough.

The Haryana wrestler has emerged as one of India’s standout performers at the 2026 U20 World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia, finishing with a silver medal in the women’s 72kg category. Her name was part of the official 72kg entry list alongside wrestlers from Azerbaijan, China, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.

A dominant start to the campaign

Tanu did not ease her way into the competition. She immediately established herself as a serious medal contender with a series of convincing performances.

Her road to the final

Opening round: Tanu defeated Hungary’s Petra Mueller 6-0.

Quarterfinal: She overcame Russia’s Liliana Kazmina 9-5.

Semifinal: Tanu produced her most emphatic result of the tournament, defeating Azerbaijan’s Zahra Karimzada 11-0 by technical superiority.

Final: She faced Japan’s Chisato Yoshida and finished the tournament with the silver medal.

Three wins took Tanu from the opening stage to the world final, with the semifinal victory particularly underlining her control and attacking ability.

The numbers tell the story

Tanu’s campaign was notable for the manner in which she progressed through the draw.

Category: Women’s 72kg

Medal: Silver

Best winning margin: 11-0

Technical superiority wins: 1

Victories before the final: 3

Final opponent: Chisato Yoshida, Japan

Championship: 2026 U20 World Championships

Venue: Bratislava, Slovakia

The 72kg field itself featured several international names, including Tanu, Yoshida, Karimzada, Mueller and Kazmina, highlighting the quality of the competition she navigated.

More than a medal: a story of determination

Tanu’s achievement carries an added layer because of her family background. Her father, Virendra Shastri, is a Sanskrit teacher, while her mother, Suman Lata, is a homemaker.

Wrestling was not simply handed to Tanu as a career path. She started training at a young age and gradually developed into a competitive wrestler under coach Sanjay Sihag. Her early physical courage reportedly convinced her family that she had the temperament required for the sport.

From local training to the international stage, the journey has demanded years of discipline. Her rise is therefore as much a story about persistence as it is about the silver medal now around her neck.

Coach sees bigger possibilities

Sihag has backed Tanu’s long-term potential, particularly because the heavier women’s categories remain highly competitive internationally.

Her performance in Bratislava provides a strong foundation. At just 20, Tanu has already experienced the pressure of a world final, defeated opponents from established wrestling nations and demonstrated that she can dominate bouts when given the opportunity.

The next challenge will be turning this U20 success into sustained senior-level performances.

India’s wider campaign

Tanu’s silver was part of a strong showing by Indian women at the championship. Savita in 62kg and Kajal in 76kg were also among India’s finalists, while Hansika Lamba remained in contention through the repechage route. The U20 World Championships are being staged in Bratislava from August 16 to 23, bringing together hundreds of young wrestlers across freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling.

A silver medal with a bigger message

Tanu Sharma may have missed out on the gold, but her run in Bratislava has already given Indian wrestling another name to watch.

A 6-0 opening victory, a 9-5 quarterfinal success and an 11-0 semifinal demolition carried her into a world final. The final result may read silver, but the manner of her campaign suggests something more significant: India could have found another promising wrestler for the future.

For a young athlete raised in a family rooted in education and guided by a wrestling coach who believed in her potential, the U20 Worlds podium is not the destination. It could be the beginning of the next chapter.
