World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz added another trophy to his stellar 2025 season, defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the Japan Open final on Tuesday.
Eighth title of the year
The Spaniard sealed his 24th career singles crown with a delicate drop shot, avenging his straight-sets defeat to Fritz at last week’s Laver Cup. The win also strengthened his push for the year-end No. 1 ranking, as he improved his season record to 67-7, the best on tour.
Consistency at the top
The Tokyo showdown marked Alcaraz’s ninth consecutive final since March. He has captured seven of those titles, including Wimbledon, with only Jannik Sinner and Fritz halting him in summit clashes.
Emotional turnaround
Reflecting on his form, Alcaraz admitted he struggled at the start of the season. “I didn’t start the year that good, struggling emotionally,” he said. “So how I came back from that, I’m just really proud of myself, and of all the people around me who have helped me to be in this position.”
Fritz hampered by injury
Fritz, ranked world No. 5, required a medical timeout after the first set and later played with his left thigh strapped. Despite the setback, he continued to battle but could not break Alcaraz’s rhythm in the second set.
