The name Swapna Barman became synonymous with resilience when she created history at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Eight years after that landmark achievement, the Indian athletics star is facing the most difficult chapter of her career after being provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) following an adverse doping test.

Barman, 29, has reportedly tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic-androgenic steroid prohibited in sport. Her name has appeared on NADA’s latest list of provisionally suspended athletes. The development comes shortly after the former Asian Games champion announced her retirement from athletics.

What happened?

According to reports, NADA’s action follows a positive test for Boldenone. A provisional suspension is not, by itself, a final finding of an anti-doping rule violation. The case will now proceed through the prescribed disciplinary process, giving Barman the opportunity to respond to the allegation and exercise her rights under the anti-doping rules.

The case therefore remains ongoing, and no final punishment has been announced at this stage.

The champion who made history

Before this controversy, Barman had already secured a permanent place in Indian athletics history.

At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, she became the first Indian athlete to win an Asian Games gold medal in the women’s heptathlon. She finished the seven-event competition with a career-best 6,026 points, defeating China’s Wang Qingling, who scored 5,954 points. Japan’s Yuki Yamasaki took bronze with 5,873 points.

Barman’s winning performance was particularly remarkable because she competed through physical discomfort, including a severe tooth problem. Her six-toed feet also meant that finding suitable competition footwear had been a recurring challenge throughout her career.

Swapna Barman’s 2018 Asian Games numbers

Event: Women’s Heptathlon

Final score: 6,026 points

Position: Gold medal

China’s Wang Qingling: 5,954 points

Japan’s Yuki Yamasaki: 5,873 points

800m: 2:21.13

Javelin: 50.63m

Career-best score at the time: 6,026 points

Previous best: 5,942 points

Her 6,026-point tally was a career best, although the Indian national record of 6,211 points, set by J.J. Shobha, remained untouched.

More than just an Asian Games medal

Barman’s journey to the top was built on overcoming obstacles. She had already won the heptathlon at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships before producing her defining performance in Jakarta. Her Asian Games triumph transformed her into one of India’s most recognisable track-and-field athletes.

Her 2018 performance also carried historic significance beyond the medal itself. India had previously won Asian Games medals in the women’s heptathlon, but Barman became the country’s first gold medallist in the event.

What happens next?

The immediate focus now shifts from Barman’s celebrated sporting achievements to the anti-doping proceedings.

Because the suspension is provisional, the current development should not be treated as a final determination that Barman committed an anti-doping rule violation. Further proceedings will determine the outcome of the case.

For an athlete whose career was defined by fighting through pain and adversity, the latest development represents an unexpected and difficult turn. The final verdict will determine how this chapter is ultimately remembered in Swapna Barman’s remarkable athletics story.
