Bhubaneswar : In a thrilling quarterfinal clash at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, seasoned Indian boxer Pooja Rani secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Poland’s Emilia Koterska to move into the women’s 80kg semifinals, thereby assuring herself a medal. The 34-year-old two-time Asian champion relied on her vast experience to overcome an early deficit, having lost the first round narrowly before dominating the second with powerful hooks and maintaining a cautious, controlled approach in the third to seal the win.
Pooja said, “Experience played a big role today. It was a tough bout, but staying focused helped me turn the match around.” Her next challenge will be against local boxer Emily Asquith in the semifinals.
India now has at least three guaranteed medals at this championship, with Jaismine Lamboria and Nupur Sheoran also advancing to the semifinals in their respective categories. This marks a significant moment for Indian women’s boxing on the global stage.
The men’s campaign faced setbacks with Abhinash Jamwal exiting in the quarterfinals, leaving only Jadumani Singh in contention.
Pooja’s composed and tactical display amidst high-pressure competition reflects her continued prominence and hunger for a maiden World Championships medal after years of perseverance and success in Asian tournaments .
