Ogun State, Nigeria —British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was injured Monday morning in a serious road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, a crash that claimed the lives of two passengers, local authorities and multiple news outlets have reported.
The 36-year-old fighter, who was a passenger in a Lexus SUV, sustained what officials described as minor injuries and was conscious when taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that two other men in the vehicle died at the scene, while two additional occupants were unhurt.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside shortly before 11 a.m. near Makun, roughly 30 miles from Lagos. Early indications suggest the vehicle lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre at high speed, a common risk on the busy highway.
A police statement read: “Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident today … he sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention … Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”
Eyewitness footage shared on social media shows Joshua sitting amid shattered glass and appearing dazed as he is helped from the wrecked vehicle — a stark moment captured in the chaotic aftermath.
The fatal crash comes just days after Joshua’s high-profile knockout win over Jake Paul in Miami, a victory that had put the boxing world on alert for what’s next in his career.
While no official statement has yet been issued by Joshua himself or his management, promoter Eddie Hearn was quoted as saying he was trying to reach the boxer and that, from the images seen so far, Joshua “appears OK.”
The Ogun State Government has expressed condolences to the families of those who died, and investigations into the exact cause of the collision are ongoing as authorities piece together what led to the tragic crash.
