CHRISTCHURCH: In a high-stakes finale at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, South Africa delivered a commanding batting performance in the fifth and deciding T20I against New Zealand, setting a daunting target in a series locked at 2-2.
Put in to bat after New Zealand opted to bowl first, the Proteas recovered from an early setback to produce a strong total of 187/4 in 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a sensational knock from Connor Esterhuizen, who once again proved to be the standout performer of the series.
Esterhuizen smashed 75 off just 33 balls, laced with six towering sixes, marking his highest T20I score and continuing his rich vein of form. His aggressive strokeplay in the death overs propelled South Africa to their highest-ever T20I total against New Zealand at this venue.
Earlier, South Africa had a shaky start, losing Tony de Zorzi cheaply in the powerplay. However, steady contributions from Wiaan Mulder and Rubin Hermann helped stabilize the innings before Esterhuizen took charge in the latter half.
New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to contain the late onslaught, conceding 62 runs in the final five overs as the momentum firmly shifted in South Africa’s favour.
With a target of 188, the hosts now face a challenging chase under pressure. While conditions, including potential dew, could aid batting, New Zealand will need a standout performance to overhaul the total and seal the series.
All eyes are now on the Black Caps’ response as the decider heads toward a thrilling finish.
