Samokov, Bulgaria – Indian wrestling sensation Kajal has continued her remarkable streak of success, clinching the 72kg title at the World Under-20 Wrestling Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria. Showing superb consistency across age and weight categories, Kajal defeated China’s Yuqi Liu 8-6 in a hard-fought summit clash.
The 17-year-old, who hails from a wrestling family in Lath village in Haryana’s Sonipat district, demonstrated strong defense to thwart a late surge by Yuqi in the final minute, securing yet another major title.
A Star on the Rise
Kajal’s gold medal adds to a stunning collection of achievements in recent months:
- She was the World U-17 champion in the 69kg category last year.
- She secured a silver medal in the 73kg category last month.
- She claimed the Asian U-20 crown in the 76kg category in July.
Switching weights between 76kg and 72kg, Kajal has now bagged two gold and two silver medals in Asian and World-level competitions within the span of just two months. Inspired by her uncle and former international wrestler Krishan Donchak, Kajal is quickly becoming one of India’s most successful young wrestlers.
Indian Women’s Team Finishes Strong
Kajal’s gold anchored a strong overall performance by the Indian women’s contingent. Shruti (50kg) and Saarika (53kg) each contributed a bronze medal.
The Indian women’s team ultimately finished in second place overall, securing a total of two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, finishing only behind wrestling powerhouse Japan, which topped the tally with five gold and two bronze medals.
