MIAMI — Victor Wembanyama is letting his performance do the talking as he intensifies his push for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award this season.
The 22-year-old star led the San Antonio Spurs to their first Southwest Division title in nine years with another commanding performance, as they defeated the Miami Heat 136-111 to continue their late-season surge.
The victory was San Antonio’s 22nd win in their last 24 games, underlining the French star’s growing influence.
Wembanyama has been at the heart of San Antonio’s success, averaging 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks per game — rare all-around numbers that underline his two-way influence. His defensive presence continues to reshape games, while his offensive versatility stretches defences both inside and from the perimeter.
“I think right now, there is a debate… I’m trying to make sure that at the end of the season, there’s no debate,” Wembanyama said, underlining his determination to finish strongly.
Only a select group of NBA legends — including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal — have recorded comparable statistical seasons, highlighting the historic nature of the Frenchman’s campaign.
