In a surprising early-season move, Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, has decided not to enter the Australian Open qualifying for the 2026 edition and will instead play an ITF W35 tournament in Bradenton, Florida (January 12–18) — a decision that has sparked chatter across the tennis world.
A Strategic Reset
Andreescu — once ranked as high as No. 4 in the world — begins 2026 ranked around No. 228, far outside the range needed to enter a Grand Slam main draw directly. After a season that saw her attempt qualifying at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the WTA 1000 in Wuhan with three unsuccessful attempts, she opted for a path that might rebuild both confidence and ranking points.
Speaking candidly about the mental aspect of the tour, the Canadian acknowledged that playing qualifying had been tough on her ego. “It is certainly a blow to the ego, but I have to put that to one side… I still have big ambitions,” she told Tennis365 while competing earlier this year.
Why Bradenton?
By entering the ITF W35 event in Bradenton, Andreescu becomes the highest-ranked player in the field, giving her a realistic chance to string together wins early in the season. Unlike Slam qualifying — where even a few wins can be elusive — this level offers a gentler competitive environment and the chance to play her way into form and confidence before returning to bigger stages later in 2026.
This strategy mirrors what some veteran players do when rebuilding — focusing first on match rhythm and fitness. While this isn’t a typical route for a former Grand Slam champion, it’s a pragmatic step given her current ranking situation.
Skipping qualifying effectively removes Andreescu from the Australian Open picture unless she receives a wildcard — which, with limited slots and competition from local and rising players, is far from assured. With other notable players also absent or uncertain for the early-season major, her absence is part of a broader shake-up in the lead-up to the season’s first Grand Slam.
Andreescu’s choice underscores the tough reality even top players face when form dips and rankings slide — a delicate balance between ambition and strategy. If the Bradenton run goes well, fans might see a revitalized Andreescu later in 2026, hungry to climb the rankings and return to Grand Slam contention.
“I know what I can accomplish… finding that balance of being patient and being that go-getter that I am is a bit tricky,” Andreescu reflected on her journey.
