Hardik Singh Backs India’s Young Guns to Lead Hockey India Governing Council Team

Chennai: Senior Indian midfielder Hardik Singh has expressed strong confidence in the country’s next generation of hockey players, backing them to take centre stage as the Hockey India Governing Council team prepares for the upcoming Men’s Hockey India League (HIL) season.
Named captain of the Governing Council side, Hardik highlighted the importance of giving young players responsibility and exposure at a high-pressure domestic league. He said the mix of youth and experience in the squad would help build a competitive unit while accelerating the development of emerging talent.

The team features several youngsters who recently impressed at the junior international level, alongside experienced Indian and overseas professionals. Hardik believes this combination will allow younger players to learn quickly, adapt to top-level hockey, and gain valuable match experience against quality opposition.

“The league offers a great platform for young players to express themselves. Playing alongside senior and international players will help them understand the demands of modern hockey,” Hardik said ahead of the season opener.

The Governing Council team was formed after assuming operations from an existing franchise and will compete against established clubs in the league. The squad will begin its campaign in Chennai, with expectations high following the return of the Hockey India League after a long hiatus.

With the international calendar packed and India aiming to strengthen its bench strength, the HIL is once again being seen as a crucial pathway for identifying and nurturing future national team regulars. Hardik’s endorsement of youth reflects a broader shift in Indian hockey — one that places trust in young guns to shape the sport’s future.
