American golfer Bud Cauley claimed his first PGA Tour title after producing a superb final-round performance to win the Canadian Open in Caledon, Ontario.
The 36-year-old carded a five-under-par 65 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 17-under-par, securing victory by two shots and ending a long wait for success on his 239th PGA Tour start.
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick finished second on 15-under, while Norway’s Viktor Hovland took third place at 14-under.
A Journey Back From Adversity
Cauley’s victory represents one of golf’s most inspiring comeback stories.
In 2018, he suffered severe injuries in a car accident, including six broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a fractured left leg. Although he briefly returned later that year, ongoing complications forced him away from professional golf for an extended period before making a full comeback in 2024.
Reflecting on the achievement, Cauley admitted there were moments when his future in the sport remained uncertain.
“There were times when we weren’t sure if I would ever be able to play again,” he said after lifting the trophy.
Back-Nine Charge Secures Historic Win
Starting the final round one shot behind overnight leader Jackson Suber, Cauley produced a decisive run on the back nine.
A brilliant birdie chip on the 12th hole moved him into the lead before four birdies in five holes helped establish a three-shot advantage heading into the closing stages.
Fitzpatrick mounted a strong challenge with a final-round 64 and climbed 10 places on the leaderboard, but a bogey on the 17th hole effectively ended his hopes of catching the American.
Reward For Persistence
The victory is a landmark moment in Cauley’s career after years of rehabilitation and setbacks.
Having battled through injury concerns and uncertainty about his playing future, the American finally achieved the breakthrough success that had eluded him throughout more than 200 PGA Tour appearances.
His Canadian Open triumph not only delivers a first PGA Tour title but also stands as a testament to perseverance, resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
