NEW DELHI, August 19: PV Sindhu is through to the quarterfinals of the 2026 BWF World Championships, continuing her impressive campaign in front of a home crowd at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
The ninth-seeded Indian defeated Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 21-16, 21-17 in the women’s singles Round of 32 on Wednesday. Sindhu needed just two games to get the job done, although Zhang made the Indian work hard for several stretches of the contest.
For Sindhu, the victory is another important step in her pursuit of a sixth World Championships medal.
Sindhu keeps control when it matters
The opening game was competitive, but Sindhu gradually created the separation she needed. Her attacking strokes and ability to control the longer exchanges helped her move ahead before she closed out the game 21-16.
Zhang, ranked 49th in the world, refused to disappear in the second game. The Canadian stayed within touching distance and attempted to put pressure on Sindhu, but the Indian veteran remained composed during the decisive points.
Sindhu eventually secured the second game 21-17, completing a straight-game victory and booking her place in the last eight.
A strong start to Sindhu’s home campaign
Sindhu had already made a statement in her opening match, defeating Ireland’s Sophia Noble 21-7, 21-11 in 29 minutes.
That victory was particularly significant because Sindhu entered the tournament with five World Championships medals — one gold, two silver and two bronze. A semifinal appearance in Delhi would guarantee her another medal and make her the first player in World Championships history to collect six women’s singles medals.
The Indian has also spoken about the importance of playing this edition on home soil. Before the tournament, Sindhu said she was happy to have the World Championships in India and hoped the home support would help her challenge for another medal.
Home crowd adds another layer
Sindhu’s return to the World Championships in India has brought an added emotional element to her campaign.
After her opening-round victory, she acknowledged the support inside the arena and said the crowd’s energy gave her confidence. She also praised the tournament’s organisation and the work of the volunteers and support staff.
Now, with Zhang safely behind her, the challenge gets significantly tougher.

Sindhu’s progression also comes on a day when India’s campaign has produced contrasting results. While Sindhu and Ayush Shetty advanced to the pre-quarterfinal stage, Lakshya Sen and Unnati Hooda were eliminated from the tournament. Shetty, meanwhile, followed his sensational first-round win over defending champion Shi Yu Qi by defeating Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama 21-8, 21-10.
The bigger target
Sindhu has already conquered this tournament once, winning the 2019 World Championships gold. She also has Olympic silver and bronze medals to her name.
But the 2026 edition carries a different significance.
This time, the World Championships have returned to India after 17 years, with New Delhi hosting the event from August 17 to 23. For Sindhu, it is an opportunity to add another chapter to one of the most decorated careers in Indian badminton.
Two victories have taken her into the quarterfinals.
Three more wins would take her to another world title.
For now, Sindhu’s message on court is clear: the chase for medal number six is still alive.
