Toprak Razgatlıoğlu’s highly anticipated move to MotoGP has marked a historic milestone for Turkish motorsport, but his debut season is proving to be a demanding transition.
The three-time World Superbike World Champion has joined Pramac Yamaha for the 2026 MotoGP season, becoming the first Turkish rider ever to compete in the premier class. Known for his aggressive braking style, late overtakes, and fearless race craft, Razgatlıoğlu built a dominant legacy in WorldSBK before stepping up to prototype machinery.
However, the transition from production-based Superbikes to MotoGP prototypes has brought a steep learning curve. Early races and testing sessions have highlighted challenges in adapting to Michelin tyres, advanced aerodynamics, and the significantly higher intensity of MotoGP competition.
Despite the difficulties, Yamaha views Razgatlıoğlu as a long-term project rather than an immediate title contender. The Japanese manufacturer is also developing a new V4-powered bike for its future MotoGP push, with the Turkish rider expected to play a key role in that evolution.
While results have been mixed so far, glimpses of his trademark late-braking ability and race intelligence have kept expectations high. His progress is being closely watched, not only by Yamaha but also by fans worldwide, as he carries the hopes of an entire nation into uncharted territory in MotoGP.
