The 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship returns to Switzerland, and expectations are higher than ever as the hosts prepare to chase a long-awaited breakthrough on home ice.
Running from May 15 to 31 in Zurich and Fribourg, the tournament brings together 16 of the world’s top hockey nations. Switzerland, backed by passionate home crowds and a strong generation of NHL talent, enters the competition with renewed belief that this could finally be their moment to challenge the sport’s traditional powerhouses.
Historically, Switzerland has remained a dangerous underdog—capable of upsetting elite teams in group stages but yet to translate that consistency into a first-ever World Championship gold medal. However, playing at home adds a new dimension, with Zurich hosting the semifinals and final, intensifying hopes of a deep playoff run.
Canada enters the tournament as the leading favourite once again, with bookmakers and analysts backing them to add another title to their record haul. Alongside them, the United States (defending champions), Finland, and Sweden are expected to form the core of the title race, making Switzerland’s path anything but easy.
Still, the Swiss roster features key NHL players and a growing belief that the gap with the elite is narrowing. With structured systems, improved depth, and home advantage, Switzerland will look to turn potential into performance when it matters most.
The big question heading into the tournament: can Switzerland finally convert promise into history—or will the traditional giants once again dominate the podium?
