PCB takes strict action
Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has been handed a one-year ban from the Pakistan Super League by the Pakistan Cricket Board after breaching his contractual agreement with the league.
Reason behind the suspension
The PCB found that Shanaka had unilaterally withdrawn from the tournament despite having a valid contract. His reasons for pulling out were not accepted under the league’s contractual framework, leading to disciplinary action.
Switch to IPL sparks controversy
Reports indicate that Shanaka withdrew from the PSL and later joined an Indian Premier League franchise, a move that overlapped with the PSL schedule. This switch raised concerns within the PCB, which has been firm about enforcing player commitments.
Player expresses regret
Following the decision, Shanaka expressed regret over the situation, stating that he had not initially intended to participate in another league when he withdrew. He also voiced hope of returning to the PSL in the future and rebuilding trust with fans and officials.
PCB sets precedent
The ban reflects the PCB’s strict stance on contract violations and aims to deter similar actions by international players. Shanaka is among the latest cricketers to face sanctions for withdrawing from the PSL after signing agreements, highlighting growing tensions between overlapping T20 leagues.
