Canberra : Pakistan’s national hockey team recently found itself at the center of a humiliating off-field crisis in Australia, after hotel bookings were reportedly cancelled due to unpaid bills by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). The incident forced players and team officials to spend hours on the streets in Canberra, turning what should have been a focused international tour into a global embarrassment.

The squad is currently touring Australia for the FIH Pro League, one of international hockey’s most competitive circuits. However, instead of concentrating solely on tactics and match preparation, the team was unexpectedly left without accommodation upon arrival. According to reports, the players had been assured that their stay at a four-star hotel had been fully paid for in advance — only to discover on arrival that no confirmed booking existed.

With no immediate resolution, players and officials were left in an uncomfortable and exhausting situation after a long journey. Head coach Tahir Zaman reportedly attempted to contact officials back in Pakistan, highlighting the urgency of the matter and the players’ lack of rest and recovery facilities at a crucial stage of the tour.

After several hours, limited rooms were eventually arranged, but the accommodation shortage meant two to three players had to share single rooms, raising concerns about comfort, preparation, and overall morale ahead of high-intensity matches.

The timing of the incident made matters worse. Pakistan soon faced Australia in the Pro League, narrowly losing 3–2 — a result that added sporting disappointment to an already demoralizing off-field episode. The team has struggled throughout the tournament, reportedly losing all six matches so far, underlining broader performance challenges.

A Pattern of Financial Struggles

This is not an isolated setback. During an earlier leg of the Pro League in Argentina, Pakistan’s players reportedly did not receive their daily allowances on time, adding to long-standing complaints about delayed payments and financial mismanagement.

Further complicating the tour, the team is currently without an official manager, following the removal of former manager Anjum Saeed after an unrelated off-field controversy on a previous tour. The absence of stable leadership has reportedly affected coordination, communication, and overall team support.

Key Facts and Talking Points

Pakistan hockey players were left without hotel accommodation in Canberra due to unpaid bills.

Players and staff spent hours on the streets before alternative arrangements were made.

Room shortages forced multiple players to share rooms, affecting recovery and comfort.

Pakistan lost 3–2 to Australia soon after the incident.

The team has reportedly lost all six matches in the ongoing Pro League campaign.

Past tours have also seen delayed allowances and financial issues.

The squad is currently operating without a manager, adding to administrative strain.

Bigger Than One Incident

Once regarded as a global powerhouse and Olympic giant, Pakistan hockey now faces a troubling reality — where administrative failures increasingly overshadow athletic talent. The Canberra episode has sparked renewed debate about governance, funding transparency, and the urgent need for reform within the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

For players striving to restore the country’s hockey legacy, such disruptions not only affect performance but also dent national pride. As critics and former players call for accountability, the question remains: Can Pakistan hockey rebuild its reputation on the field if stability off it remains uncertain?
