Victor Wembanyama has been named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, making history as the first unanimous winner of the award.
Historic achievement
The San Antonio Spurs centre received all 100 first-place votes, becoming the youngest winner at just 22. He is also only the second player in franchise history after David Robinson to claim the honour within his first three seasons.
Wembanyama led the league in blocks for the third consecutive year, averaging 3.1 per game, alongside career-best numbers in points and rebounds.
Elite defensive impact
His presence has transformed Spurs’ defence, helping them secure one of the best records in the league. German legend Dirk Nowitzki praised his influence, saying his defensive ability changes games entirely.
Other contenders
Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder finished second, while Ausar Thompson of the Detroit Pistons placed third.
Play-off action continues
Wembanyama’s form has carried into the play-offs, where he starred in the Spurs’ opening win.
Elsewhere, the Cleveland Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead against the Toronto Raptors, powered by Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks also secured comeback wins, keeping their series finely balanced.
