The 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland got off to a thrilling start in Warsaw as five grandmasters finished Day 1 tied for the lead with four points from six possible after three rapid rounds.
American star Fabiano Caruana, Uzbekistan’s rising sensation Javokhir Sindarov, former US champion Wesley So, defending champion Vladimir Fedoseev and controversial American grandmaster Hans Niemann all ended the day on 4/6 points in a tightly contested leaderboard.
Held at the iconic POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the tournament marks the opening leg of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour and features some of the world’s biggest names in rapid and blitz chess.
Sindarov emerged as one of the standout performers of the day, remaining unbeaten through the opening rounds. The young Uzbek, who recently earned a World Championship challenge spot, showcased fearless attacking play against an elite field.
Meanwhile, Niemann grabbed headlines after defeating reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a dramatic time scramble. The result added more intensity to an already fiercely competitive field.
Caruana produced a crucial final-round victory over Wesley So to join the leaders, while Fedoseev recovered strongly after an early setback to stay in contention. Local favourite Jan-Krzysztof Duda and French star Alireza Firouzja remained within touching distance of the top group.
“It was an intense start and every game felt decisive,” one commentator noted as rapid wins continued to carry double-point importance in the tournament format.
The event consists of nine rapid rounds followed by 18 blitz rounds, with a total prize fund of $200,000 and $50,000 reserved for the champion.
As the tournament progresses, the battle at the top promises even more drama with several players separated by just a single point after the opening day.
