Alexandra Eala Battles Past Magdalena Frech for First Italian Open Win

Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala earned her first-ever main draw victory at the 2026 Italian Open after defeating Poland’s Magdalena Fręch in a hard-fought first-round clash in Rome.

The 20-year-old battled for two hours and seven minutes before sealing a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory at the Foro Italico, overcoming a strong comeback from Frech to advance to the Round of 64.

Eala dominated the opening set, producing an aggressive baseline display and winning the set in straight games. Her powerful groundstrokes and sharp movement troubled Frech early as the Filipina raced into complete control of the contest.

However, the momentum shifted in the second set as Frech responded strongly with improved serving and more consistent rallies from the baseline. The Polish player capitalised on several Eala errors to level the match and force a deciding set.

The deciding set proved tense and competitive, with Frech initially taking a 2-0 lead. Eala, though, showed impressive composure under pressure and gradually fought back to level the set before eventually closing out the match in the final games.

Following the victory, Eala said she was proud of how she handled the difficult moments during the match, particularly in the final set when momentum could easily have slipped away.

The win also boosted Eala’s live WTA ranking, with reports suggesting she climbed to around World No. 38 following the result.

This year marks Eala’s second appearance at the Italian Open after she suffered a first-round exit in Rome in 2025. The tournament is an important part of her clay-court preparations ahead of the 2026 French Open later this month.

Eala will next face China’s Wang Xinyu in the second round. Wang entered the tournament as the 31st seed and received a first-round bye.

Widely regarded as one of Asia’s brightest young tennis talents, Eala continues to build momentum on the WTA Tour after a breakthrough 2026 season that has included strong performances at several top-level tournaments.
