Mark Wood is hoping to return to bowling later this summer as he continues his recovery from a knee injury that disrupted his Ashes campaign.
The 36-year-old underwent surgery on his left knee in March 2025 and made a brief comeback in the first Test against Australia in Perth. However, he managed to bowl only 11 overs before being ruled out of the remainder of the series, marking yet another frustrating injury setback in his career.
Injury struggles continue
Wood has long been regarded as one of England’s fastest bowlers, but injuries have frequently interrupted his progress. Before the Ashes, he had already been out of Test cricket for 15 months due to an elbow issue followed by the knee problem.
Speaking about his recovery, Wood admitted he must take a cautious approach. He acknowledged that rushing back could risk ending his career, especially at this stage. The pacer described this period as possibly his “last chance” to return properly and contribute again at the highest level.
Careful comeback planned
The Durham quick remains focused on regaining full fitness and adding to his international appearances. Despite setbacks, his motivation to represent England cricket team remains strong.
Wood revealed that the long rehabilitation process has been mentally and physically challenging. After spending months rebuilding his fitness, his brief return followed by another injury has tested his patience.
England pace attack in transition
His absence comes at a time when England’s pace attack is undergoing significant change. Veteran bowlers like James Anderson and Stuart Broad are no longer part of the Test setup, while others like Chris Woakes face uncertain futures.
In Wood’s absence, younger bowlers such as Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson are expected to take on bigger roles. There are also injury concerns around Brydon Carse and fitness doubts over Jofra Archer ahead of the home summer.
England begin their Test season against New Zealand cricket team on 4 June, but Wood is unlikely to feature early in the series as he continues his recovery.
Despite the uncertainty, Wood remains determined to return to full fitness and make one more impact for England before his career reaches its final stages.
