Indian squash player Sanya Vats finished runner-up at the Ballarat Open, a USD 3,000 PSA Challenger event in Victoria, Australia, after losing to top seed and local favourite Sarah Cardwell in the women’s final on Sunday.
The second-seeded Vats went down 6-11, 8-11, 6-11 in the summit clash as Cardwell controlled the contest from the outset to claim the title on home soil.
Despite the defeat, Vats enjoyed an impressive campaign, reaching the final after overcoming two South Korean opponents and showing resilience throughout the tournament.
Cardwell Controls Final
Cardwell made a confident start and took the opening game 11-6 before Vats attempted to fight back in the second.
The Indian stayed competitive but was unable to disrupt the Australian’s rhythm as Cardwell secured the game 11-8.
With the title within reach, Cardwell maintained her pressure in the third game and closed out the match 11-6 without allowing Vats to force a fourth game.
Vats Overcomes Quarterfinal Test
Vats had to fight back from a game down in the quarterfinal against South Korea’s Sunghee Oh.
After losing the opening game 6-11, the Indian responded by taking the second 11-9 before edging a closely fought third game 12-10.
She then maintained her momentum to win the fourth 11-4 and secure her place in the semifinals.
Straight-Games Win In Semifinal
Vats produced a commanding performance against another South Korean opponent, Ain Jun, in the last four.
The second seed dictated the pace from the beginning and completed an 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 victory in straight games.
She consistently applied pressure and prevented Jun from settling into the contest.
Positive Campaign For Vats
Although Vats missed out on the title, her run to the Ballarat Open final represents an encouraging result on the PSA Challenger circuit.
The campaign provided valuable international experience and ranking points while highlighting the Delhi-based player’s ability to recover from difficult situations and compete against players from different countries.
For Cardwell, the victory completed a successful home tournament as the top seed converted her billing into the title.
For Vats, the runner-up finish adds another positive step to her development on the international squash circuit.
