Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026 Gold Defence Begins After Injury Comeback

Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026 campaign has received a major boost as the Indian steeplechaser returns to competition after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Sable underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL and meniscus after suffering the injury in 2025. The setback forced him to miss the 2026 Commonwealth Games, but months of rehabilitation and intensive training have helped him regain the fitness he believes he had when he won the Asian Games gold medal.

Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026 Preparation Gains Momentum

Sable has spent much of the past year rebuilding his fitness rather than competing regularly.

His recovery included training at a high-altitude facility in Ooty, followed by sessions at the Inspire Institute of Sport in Bellary and the Sports Authority of India centre in Bengaluru.

The Indian athlete also trained extensively on SAI’s Smart Track, a softer running surface that proved particularly useful during his rehabilitation after ACL surgery. Sable credited the facility for helping him regain confidence while reducing the physical stress associated with running on harder surfaces.

Sable’s Road Back From ACL and Meniscus Injury

The road back was not only physically demanding for Sable.

The injury also created considerable uncertainty about whether he would be able to return to the highest level. After surgery, the 30-year-old admitted that he experienced fear and self-doubt, particularly when he began training again and continued to feel discomfort.

Missing the Commonwealth Games added to that frustration. However, Sable gradually rebuilt his confidence through consistent training and support from the Athletics Federation of India, SAI and fellow athletes.

Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026: Key Test Ahead

Despite having limited competition experience since his injury, Sable believes his physical condition has returned to the level he had before the setback.

He has described his preparation for the 2026 Asian Games as strong and said he feels his old fitness has returned. With the Games approaching, that confidence has become an important part of his comeback.

Sable’s target is clear: defend the 3000m steeplechase gold medal he won at the 2022 Asian Games, which were held in Hangzhou in 2023.

Can Sable Defend His Asian Games Gold?

Sable’s biggest challenge now is converting training form into competitive performance.

He is scheduled to return to the 3000m steeplechase at the Indian Athletics Series Final in New Delhi on September 10. It will be his first steeplechase competition in around a year and an important test before the Asian Games.

Sable has competed only once since recovering from his injury, taking part in a 5000m race at the IFAM World Athletics Continental Tour event in Oordegem, Belgium. His return to the steeplechase therefore carries particular importance.

Asian Games Gold Defence Remains the Goal

Sable’s previous Asian Games triumph remains one of the biggest achievements of his career.

After winning gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2022 Asian Games, he now has the opportunity to defend that title in Japan. However, the priority will be to ensure that his body and race rhythm are ready for the demands of championship competition.

The injury has already cost him valuable competitive time, but his recovery has given him a chance to rebuild both his fitness and belief.

Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026 Challenge Awaits

The Avinash Sable Asian Games 2026 story is now moving towards its most important stage.

From surgery and uncertainty to months of rehabilitation and a return to competition, Sable has had to overcome challenges well beyond the track. His upcoming steeplechase race in New Delhi will provide the first major indication of how successfully he has rebuilt his competitive form.

With the Asian Games approaching, Sable’s objective remains straightforward: return to the steeplechase arena and give himself the best possible chance of defending his gold medal.

For the Indian athlete, the comeback is already a significant achievement. The next challenge is to turn that comeback into another Asian Games medal.
