Ishan Kishan Leads East Zone Run Fest
Skipper Ishan Kishan struck an unbeaten 111 to lead East Zone’s run glut against a sloppy South Zone as they finished the opening day of the Duleep Trophy final at 385 for four on Sunday.
Kishan and Kumar Kushagra (63) remained unbeaten at stumps, with the pair adding 144 runs for the fifth wicket in just 26.4 overs to put East in a commanding position.
Ishan Kishan Hundred Sets Up East
Kishan completed 4,000 first-class runs during his 135-ball innings, which featured 14 fours and a six. The left-hander combined aggression with composure to register his 10th first-class century.
He reached his hundred with a driven four off Shreyas Gopal, who was playing his 100th first-class match.
Kishan had arrived at the crease when East were in trouble at 147 for three but immediately took charge alongside Shikhar Mohan.
The pair added 94 runs for the fourth wicket before Mohan was dismissed for 85, chopping left-arm pacer C V Milind onto his stumps.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Easwaran Shine
East’s innings had begun strongly through Abhimanyu Easwaran and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Easwaran scored a composed 72 while Sooryavanshi made 44 from just 37 balls as the opening pair put on 100 runs in 14 overs.
Sooryavanshi’s entertaining knock ended when he played a reckless pull against Milind, offering substitute fielder Tanay Thayagarajan a straightforward catch in the deep.
The dismissal came after South tested the young batter with a short-pitched delivery and highlighted the importance of patience despite the sizeable crowd gathered to watch the teenage sensation.
South Bowlers Struggle On Flat Pitch
South’s bowling attack struggled throughout the day on a pitch that remained good for batting.
Mohammed Siraj endured an especially difficult outing, finishing with figures of 14-1-96-0 across three spells.
The India pacer was struck for boundaries by Sooryavanshi, Easwaran and Kushagra as he failed to make an impact.
While the flat surface offered little assistance, South also struggled to contain East’s batters, allowing the hosts to build a substantial first-innings total.
Kushagra continued the attacking approach late in the day, remaining unbeaten alongside Kishan at the close.
East Zone In Command
East Zone’s batting dominance has put South under significant pressure after the first day of the Duleep Trophy final.
With six wickets still in hand, East will look to push towards a massive first-innings total on Monday.
South, meanwhile, will need early wickets to prevent the match from slipping further away and avoid being buried under an even bigger run deficit.
