Marc Cucurella has acknowledged that an opportunity to return to FC Barcelona would be hard to refuse, though the defender insists he remains happy at Chelsea F.C. for now.
The 27-year-old left-back began his football journey in Spain, progressing through the youth ranks of Barcelona before making a single senior appearance in 2017. He later built his reputation in La Liga with spells at SD Eibar and Getafe CF before moving to England with Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. in 2021.
A strong debut season in the Premier League earned him a £60m transfer to Chelsea, where he has since established himself as a regular starter.
Barcelona link still appeals
Speaking about a possible return to Spain, Cucurella admitted the idea still holds emotional appeal because of his roots. He said Spain will always feel like home and that it is natural for players to think about returning at some stage in their careers.
When specifically asked about Barcelona, he acknowledged that such an offer would be difficult to turn down. However, he emphasised that any future decision would involve his family and that he is currently focused on his career in London.
Impact of managerial changes at Chelsea
Cucurella also reflected on the impact of managerial instability at Chelsea. The Spaniard has played under several coaches since joining the club, including Enzo Maresca, who led the team to a top-four finish and success in the Club World Cup before leaving earlier this year.
His departure was followed by the appointment of Liam Rosenior, after a short caretaker spell under academy coach Calum McFarlane.
Cucurella admitted the transition affected the squad, noting that players had developed a strong connection with Maresca. Chelsea’s season has also been challenging on the pitch, including a heavy Champions League defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain F.C..
Despite those struggles, the defender maintains he is committed to helping Chelsea improve while keeping an open mind about his long-term future.
