Colombo: Cricket’s fiercest rivalry returns to centre stage on Sunday night as India and Pakistan, after days of uncertainty over whether the marquee fixture would go ahead, prepare to square off at the R Premadasa Stadium in a high-voltage T20 World Cup clash.
With no bilateral cricket between the two nations, every encounter carries the weight of history and heightened emotion. A Super 8 berth is within touching distance for the victor at the R Premadasa Stadium, while the loser will be left needing a win in their final group game to stay alive.
Pakistan’s Journey So Far
Led by Salman Agha, Pakistan have been stationed in Colombo for the group stage, though their first two matches were played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. They survived a scare against the Netherlands before cruising past the USA.
Yet, concerns linger around their middle-overs tempo. Despite brisk Powerplay starts from the openers, Pakistan have struggled to maintain scoring momentum. Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub remain crucial at the top, with Farhan having struck a defining 57 the last time these sides met in an Asia Cup final. Salman Agha’s promotion to No. 3 to counter spin has not yet delivered the desired impact, while Babar Azam has compiled runs without fully silencing questions over strike rate.
Team balance will again hinge on surface assessment. Head coach Mike Hesson and Agha opted for a spin-heavy combination against the USA, deploying just one specialist seamer in Shaheen Afridi. While that move paid dividends, Afridi’s reduced bite with the new ball remains a talking point — particularly against an Indian side known for explosive Powerplay batting.
India’s Campaign: Questions to Answer
For India, captained by Suryakumar Yadav, the title defence has not been entirely smooth. They were rattled by the USA, slipping to 77/6, and then lost momentum after a strong start against Namibia. On pitches where the ball grips and holds, India’s batters have looked slightly uneasy — conditions that could resurface in Colombo.
There are also fitness concerns. Abhishek Sharma missed the previous game due to a stomach infection that required hospitalisation. Though discharged, he may not yet be at full strength. If unavailable, Sanju Samson could continue, but will need to convert promising starts into match-shaping contributions.
India were troubled by Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus’ variations, and now face a fresh examination in Usman Tariq, whose deceptive release and change of pace have unsettled batters throughout the tournament.
The Kuldeep Question
When these sides last met in Colombo during the 2023 Asia Cup (ODI format), Kuldeep Yadav dismantled Pakistan with a five-wicket haul. Yet he has not featured in this World Cup so far, with India preferring Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy.
Given the spin-friendly nature of the venue, the Indian think tank may consider bringing in the left-arm wrist spinner. The dilemma lies in whether to replace Arshdeep Singh — with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah leading the pace unit — or sacrifice batting depth to accommodate an additional specialist spinner.
India enjoy a commanding record in T20 World Cup encounters, leading Pakistan 7-1. Pakistan’s sole win came in Dubai in 2021 — a 10-wicket triumph that remains their only victory over India in men’s World Cup history across formats.
Recent head-to-head T20I results also favour India, who have won the last five meetings between the two teams.
Spin Likely to Shape the Contest
Statistics from the R Premadasa Stadium underline the potential impact of spin. In six competitive white-ball games at the venue this year, 51 of 83 wickets have fallen to spin at an economy rate of 5.66. Pacers, in contrast, have taken 32 wickets at a higher economy of 7.28.
If those trends continue, the battle through the middle overs could ultimately decide the fate of this blockbuster clash.
Weather Watch
Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has flagged the possibility of a developing low-pressure system. Typically, the day’s heat builds before evening showers arrive — a scenario fans will hope does not interrupt what promises to be another gripping chapter in cricket’s greatest rivalry.
