Kolkata: The 2025–26 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) got off to an engaging start as the opening two matches on Saturday produced contrasting storylines — a dominant title defence and a spirited debut performance.
Bagan Begin Title Defence in Style
Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant launched their campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Kerala Blasters at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
Backed by a vociferous home crowd, the Mariners controlled proceedings from the outset. Their early pressure paid dividends in the 36th minute when Australian striker Jamie MacLaren displayed sharp movement inside the box before firing home a precise left-footed strike.
Kerala struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite second-half changes. Just when it seemed the Blasters might find a way back, Mohun Bagan put the contest beyond doubt in stoppage time. Defender Tom Aldred rose highest to power in a header from a well-delivered set-piece, sealing a comfortable opening win.
The performance underlined Bagan’s attacking depth and defensive solidity — a warning to the rest of the league as they begin their quest to retain the crown.
Inter Kashi Impress on ISL Debut
Earlier, ISL newcomers Inter Kashi marked their debut with a gritty 1–1 draw against FC Goa at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, Goa.
Despite being second-best in possession, Inter Kashi stunned the hosts by taking the lead in first-half stoppage time through Prasanth Karuthadathkuni. FC Goa, however, kept pressing and were rewarded late in the game when Dejan Dražić converted a penalty to restore parity.
The match took another twist when Inter Kashi goalkeeper Lluis Tarrés was shown a red card for a last-man foul inside the box. Down to ten men, the debutants showed remarkable resilience to hold on for a point.
Matchweek 1 has already showcased the ISL’s competitive balance — established powerhouses asserting authority and newcomers proving they belong. With 91 matches lined up this season, the early results hint at another intense and unpredictable campaign ahead.
