In a game that will be remembered for years, the Seattle Seahawks pulled off an improbable 38-37 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, securing a spot in the playoffs and taking control of the NFC West.
Seattle entered Week 16 with an 11-3 record, already seen as one of the NFL’s top teams. But after losing twice to the Rams earlier in the season, many analysts had written off their chances of claiming the NFC West and earning the top seed with a first-round bye and home-field advantage. On Thursday, the Seahawks proved that narrative wrong in spectacular fashion.
Trailing by 16 points in the fourth quarter, a deficit that had historically been insurmountable for Seattle—they were 0-155-0 all-time in such situations—the Seahawks staged a historic comeback. The rally began with a special teams touchdown by Rashid Shaheed, setting the tone for a dramatic finish. Quarterback Sam Darnold then threw a late-game touchdown to force overtime and delivered another in OT to tight end Jaxon Smith-Njigba, setting up head coach Mike Macdonald’s daring two-point attempt. Darnold connected with Eric Saubert in the back of the end zone, completing the comeback and sealing the win.
The Rams, led by Matthew Stafford, put on a passing clinic, with Stafford throwing for 457 yards and connecting with Puka Nacua for 225 receiving yards. The Rams executed big plays consistently, including seven completions of 25-plus yards, racking up 257 yards in the first half alone—more than they had managed in four quarters in Week 11 against Seattle—and finishing with 581 yards total.
Seattle’s defense, one of the league’s stingiest units before the game, allowing the second-fewest points in the NFL, struggled to contain the Rams’ explosive passing attack. Injuries in the fourth quarter further tested the Seahawks, with safety Coby Bryant, nickelback Nick Emmanwori, and cornerback Riq Woolen all exiting the game. Yet, the unit rose to the occasion when it mattered most, helping secure the dramatic comeback.
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 12-3, putting themselves squarely in the driver’s seat for both the NFC West crown and a top seed in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Rams fell to 11-4, still in contention but now facing an uphill battle to reclaim divisional supremacy.
Thursday night’s clash was more than just a game—it was a testament to resilience, big-play ability, and a team refusing to be written off. For the Seahawks, it was a reminder that in the NFL, anything can happen when destiny calls.
