India Women World Cup Champions Honoured by President

New Delhi: The Indian Women’s Cricket team, fresh off their historic ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 triumph, met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan Thursday. Earlier, the team had also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who lauded their remarkable achievement and inspirational journey.

India secured their maiden ICC Women’s World Cup title on November 2, 2025, defeating South Africa by 52 runs at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. Batting first, India posted a commanding total of 298/7, highlighted by a blistering 87 from Shafali Verma, who was named Player of the Match. Verma also contributed with the ball, taking 2 crucial wickets, underlining her all-round performance. Deepti Sharma added a vital 58 runs, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur anchored the innings with composure and tactical brilliance.

In bowling, Deepti Sharma starred with a five-wicket haul in the final and ended the tournament with 22 wickets and 215 runs, earning the Player of the Tournament award. South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt fought back with a valiant century (101), but the team was bowled out for 246. This win marked India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup title, a historic moment in the country’s cricketing history.

The triumph carries immense importance for Indian cricket. Beyond being India’s maiden women’s World Cup win, it symbolizes the growing recognition and stature of women’s cricket in the country. The team’s journey, overcoming early tournament setbacks and beating strong opponents like seven-time champions Australia in the semi-finals, reflects resilience, skill, and determination.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a historic cash reward of ₹51 crore, while the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded ₹39 crore, bringing the total prize money to ₹90 crore. Of the BCCI reward, ₹39 crore will go directly to the players, with the remainder allocated to coaches and support staff. The victory sparked nationwide celebrations, with citizens, media, and sports organizations hailing the team’s performance as a watershed moment for women’s sports in India.

Meeting with President Murmu
At Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the team personally, praising them as role models for young athletes across the country. She said:
“This team reflects India. They represent different regions, different social backgrounds, different circumstances, but they are one Team—India.”

The President’s words underscored the unity, diversity, and determination embodied by the team, emphasizing the inspirational impact of their journey on India’s youth, particularly young girls aspiring to pursue sports professionally.

This historic win, coupled with recognition from the highest offices of the nation, cements the Indian women’s cricket team as pioneers in Indian sports. Their achievement sets a benchmark for future generations, highlighting the power of teamwork, perseverance, and excellence on the international stage.
