Mikaela Mayer created history by becoming a unified light-middleweight and three-division world champion after a dominant victory over Mary Spencer in Canada. The 35-year-old American outclassed the hometown favourite across 10 rounds at Montreal Casino, winning by unanimous decision with scores of 100-90, 98-92 and 98-92.
A Special Win for Mayer
“This is extra special,” said Mayer, who added the WBA, WBC, and WBO belts to her collection. Already a WBO welterweight champion and former super-featherweight titleholder, Mayer has now conquered three divisions with a record of 22 wins and two losses. Against the taller 5ft 11in Spencer, she used her sharp jab and intelligent movement to control the fight. Despite Spencer landing a few solid shots in the fourth round, Mayer finished strong, closing with powerful hooks to seal a wide points victory.
Looking Ahead to Undisputed Glory
Mayer has made it clear her next goal is to become an undisputed champion. She had hoped to face Wales’ Lauren Price for all four welterweight titles, but the bout fell through due to promotional issues. If that fight cannot be arranged, Mayer may instead target IBF light-middleweight champion Oshae Jones for undisputed status in that division.
“The most important thing is that I have options,” Mayer said. “I’d love to go back down to 147lb for undisputed, then come back up and defend at 154lb.”
A future super-fight with American great Claressa Shields also remains a tantalising possibility. If Shields moves down to super-middleweight, Mayer has already expressed her willingness to meet her there — a matchup that would be one of the biggest in women’s boxing history.
