World Athletics has officially ratified four new world records — including Mondo Duplantis’ latest pole vault milestone and three U20 world marks set by Hubert Troscianka, Zhang Jiale, and Yan Ziyi.
Duplantis raises the bar again
At the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, Swedish star Mondo Duplantis once again proved why he’s in a league of his own. The Olympic champion cleared 6.30m on his third and final attempt, surpassing his previous world record of 6.29m set in Budapest in 2023. The feat marked his 14th world record and his third consecutive world title.
“It’s better than I could have imagined,” Duplantis said after the event. “To give you guys this world record is amazing. The crowd were so loud. Thank you so much. I’m just so happy.”
It was a night of unprecedented depth in pole vault history — seven athletes cleared 5.90m or more, and for the first time, 5.95m was not enough for a medal.
Zhang and Yan shine in Quzhou
China’s Zhang Jiale and Yan Ziyi produced record-breaking performances at the Chinese Championships in Quzhou. Zhang threw a massive 77.24m in the women’s U20 hammer, smashing her own mark and surpassing the previous U20 world record of 73.43m set by Finland’s Silja Kosonen in 2021.
Yan, just 17, registered a 65.89m throw in the women’s U20 javelin — improving her own record by more than a metre. Both athletes have now established themselves among the brightest prospects in world athletics.
Troscianka’s all-round brilliance
At the European U20 Championships in Tampere, Poland’s Hubert Troscianka became the first athlete in history to cross the 8500-point barrier in the men’s U20 decathlon. His score of 8514 points broke the previous world record of 8435 set by Germany’s Niklas Kaul in 2017.
Troscianka’s remarkable effort included a 10.74s 100m, a 7.26m long jump, and a 46.21s 400m — a new world U20 decathlon best. The Polish teenager’s versatility and consistency across events underline his potential to be a future Olympic contender.
With Duplantis still rewriting history and the next generation already making headlines, the 2025 athletics season is shaping up as one of the most exciting in recent memory.
