Bhubaneswar: Idian weightlifting star Saikhom Mirabai Chanu added another laurel to her illustrious career, clinching the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg category at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships held in Førde, Norway.
In a gritty performance, Chanu lifted a total of 199 kg, composed of 84 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean & jerk. She made a solid start with 84 kg in snatch (after two failed attempts at 87 kg), then roared back in the clean & jerk with successful lifts of 109, 112, and 115 kg — the final lift matching a personal best.
Gold went to North Korea’s Ri Song-gum, who posted a dominant total of 213 kg (91 kg + 122 kg), setting new world records in the total and clean & jerk. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took bronze with a total of 198 kg.
For Chanu, this silver is especially meaningful — it marks her first world-level medal since 2022, ending India’s three-year medal drought at this stage. She had faced injury setbacks in recent years, making this comeback all the more inspiring.
Her journey continues to be one of resilience and excellence. With this medal, she reaffirms her place among the world’s elite — and gives Indian weightlifting reason to dream again.
