Mirabai Chanu Faces New Challenge as IWF Drops 49kg Category for LA28 Olympics

Indian weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu is confronting a significant shift in her Olympic aspirations. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has announced the elimination of the 49kg weight category for women in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision necessitates a strategic adjustment for Chanu, who secured a silver medal in the 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Under the new structure, the lightest women’s category will be 53kg, effectively removing the 49kg class from Olympic competition. This change means that Chanu, who has consistently competed in the 49kg division, will need to adapt to a higher weight class to remain eligible for Olympic participation.

In response to this development, Chanu’s team has emphasized the importance of focusing on immediate goals. Their primary objective is the upcoming Asian Games, where Chanu aims to continue her medal-winning performances. The team remains optimistic, highlighting that while the Olympic landscape has changed, Chanu’s commitment to excellence and her adaptability will guide her through this transition.

This restructuring by the IWF is part of a broader effort to streamline weight divisions in Olympic weightlifting, reducing the number of categories from 10 to 8, with 6 for men and 6 for women. While the immediate impact on Chanu is clear, her resilience and past achievements suggest she will navigate this new challenge with determination and focus.

As Chanu prepares for the Asian Games and plans her future in the evolving landscape of Olympic weightlifting, her journey continues to inspire athletes worldwide, demonstrating that adaptability and perseverance are key to success in the face of change.
