LA28 Olympics: India’s Medal Hopes Highlighted in First Competition Schedule Release

Los Angeles, USA – With exactly three years remaining until the opening ceremony, the organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics have unveiled the initial competition schedule, offering a glimpse into the Games that will run from July 14 to July 30, 2028. For India, several key events have been highlighted as prime opportunities for medal contention.

Key Events and Dates for Indian Medal Aspirations

The schedule release pinpoints specific periods for sports where the Indian contingent is expected to shine:

  • Cricket (July 12-29): Making a historic return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, Cricket is seen as India’s strongest medal prospect. The women’s tournament, a six-team affair, will commence on July 12 and conclude on July 20 at the Fairgrounds Cricket Stadium. The men’s team will play its first match on July 22, with the medal matches scheduled for July 29.
  • Athletics (July 15-30): India’s biggest Olympic name, Neeraj Chopra, will be a focal point in the men’s javelin throw. Athletics events, considered another strong gold medal chance alongside cricket, will span from July 15 to July 24 at the iconic Coliseum.
  • Shooting (July 15-25): A consistent medal contributor for India, shooting will begin on Day 1 of the Games and continue until July 25 at the Long Beach Target Shooting Hall. Shooting accounted for three of India’s six medals at the Paris Olympics.
  • Badminton (July 15-24): India is expected to field strong contenders in badminton, with events taking place at the Galen Centre.
  • Hockey (July 12-29): India boasts a rich Olympic history in hockey, having won eight gold medals. The team will be keen to add to this tally, with matches to be played at Carson Field.
  • Wrestling (July 24-30): Wrestling has been a significant source of Olympic medals for India since the 2008 edition. The competition will be held from July 24 to July 30 at the LA Convention Centre Hall 2.

Ceremonies and First Medal

The Opening Ceremony for the LA28 Games is scheduled for July 14, 2028, at 8:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. PT), with a unique split format between the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Closing Ceremony will take place on July 30 at the Coliseum.

The first medal of the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 is set to be awarded on Day 1 itself in the Triathlon event, which will be held along the picturesque coastline of Venice Beach.

A Historic Schedule Shift

Notably, the LA28 Games will feature a historic swap in the scheduling of two major events: athletics and swimming. Athletics will now take place during the first week of competition (July 15-24), while swimming has been moved to the second week (July 22-30) and will be held at the Inglewood Zone.
