Bhubaneswar: In a thrilling high jump final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Poland’s Maria Żodzik soared to a silver medal by clearing a personal best height of 2.00 meters. The dramatic event, interrupted by rain, saw Żodzik delivering her best performance on the world stage, securing Poland’s sole medal at the championships.
Clearance at 2.00m came on her third attempt, earning her second place behind Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers, who also cleared the same height but took gold on the countback rule. The bronze medals were shared by Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Serbia’s Angelina Topic, both clearing 1.97m.
Żodzik, who switched allegiance from Belarus to Poland in 2024, expressed exhilaration over her breakthrough:
“This medal means everything to me. Setting a new personal best at such a high-pressure event makes this moment unforgettable. I am proud to represent Poland and to show the world the result of hard work and determination,” she said.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone and a rising presence in international athletics, signaling that she is a top contender in future global events.
