Bhubaneswar: India is on the brink of officially hosting the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, with Ahmedabad, Gujarat, recommended by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board. The announcement, pending ratification at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November, positions India as a rising force in global sports.
The 2030 Games mark 100 years since the inaugural Commonwealth Games in Hamilton, Canada, and will be India’s second time hosting, following New Delhi in 2010. Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir emphasized the Games’ potential to evolve the movement, impacting athletes, communities, and nations across the Commonwealth.
Ahmedabad is also central to India’s ambitions for the 2036 Summer Olympics. Despite the city being favored due to strong backing from IOC member Nita Ambani, the bid faces scrutiny. The International Olympic Committee raised concerns over governance issues at the Indian Olympic Association, a lack of bid detail, past poor performance (India finished 71st at Paris 2024 with six medals), and ongoing doping challenges.
With the 2030 Commonwealth Games, India aims to strengthen its credibility, setting the stage for a potential Olympic debut in Ahmedabad, while addressing past criticisms and showcasing its growing global sports stature.
