Dubai, UAE – The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is set to electrify the UAE once again, announcing a massive championship double-header for its return to Dubai. Two PFL World Title bouts will headline PFL Champions Series: Road to Dubai – The Rematch on Friday, October 3, at the Coca-Cola Arena, cementing Dubai’s growing stature as a global MMA hub.
Lightweight Title Rematch: Nurmagomedov vs. Hughes
The event’s main attraction is the biggest rematch in PFL history, featuring Dagestan’s undefeated Usman Nurmagomedov (19-0, 1 NC) defending his PFL Lightweight world title against Ireland’s Paul Hughes (14-2).
Their first encounter, held in January of this year at the very same Coca-Cola Arena, was an instant “Fight of the Year” contender. That initial bout sold out the arena, drawing passionate fans from Russia and Ireland who created an electric atmosphere for a grueling five-round battle. While Nurmagomedov was ultimately declared the victor, the outcome sparked intense debate among fans, many of whom felt Hughes had done enough to earn the win. This contentious result has set the stage for an unmissable rematch between two of the world’s elite Lightweights.
Fueled by that narrow loss, Hughes returned with a powerful statement win in May, electrifying fans in Belfast with a 42-second stoppage of Bruno Miranda in front of another sold-out crowd. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Nurmagomedov remains undefeated and is widely regarded as one of MMA’s most technically complete fighters. Competing in what many consider the sport’s toughest division, his resume includes impressive victories over elite opponents such as former champions Patricky Pitbull and Benson Henderson, as well as Alexander Shabliy.
Co-Main Event: Anderson vs. Yagshimuradov for Light Heavyweight Gold
In the highly anticipated co-main event, former Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Corey Anderson (19-6) will challenge 2024 PFL Light Heavyweight Tournament Champion Dovlet Yagshimuradov (25-7-1) for the PFL Light Heavyweight World Title. This clash promises another high-stakes encounter between two top contenders in the division.
Grudge Matches and Regional Champions Collide
The early card is already shaping up with several intriguing matchups:
- Heavyweight Clash: Former Iranian National Team wrestler Pouya Rahmani (4-0) will face former Tunisian Olympic wrestler Slim Trabelsi (8-0). Both fighters will be looking to maintain their undefeated professional records in this heavyweight showdown.
- Long-Awaited Grudge Match: A grudge match nearly seven years in the making is finally set to unfold as Zubaira Tukhugov (20-6-1) finally steps into the SmartCage against Artem Lobov (14-15-1). Originally scheduled to fight in 2018, the bout was scrapped following the infamous UFC 229 post-fight brawl and subsequent suspensions. On October 3, these two rivals will finally settle their score.
- Battle of Regional Champions: 2024 PFL MENA Welterweight Champion Omar El Dafrawy (14-5) of Egypt will meet 2024 PFL Europe Welterweight Champion Florim Zendeli (10-1-1) of Albania. This bout pits two PFL Regional Tournament winners against each other, both currently enjoying multi-fight unbeaten streaks.
Additional main card and early card bouts are expected to be announced shortly, adding further depth to what promises to be a memorable night of MMA action in Dubai.
