Vancouver, Canada – In one of the most significant transfers in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, former Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Müller has officially signed a season-long deal with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Canadian club announced the landmark acquisition on Wednesday, August 6th, bringing a true footballing legend to North America.
A Storied Career at Bayern Comes to an End
Müller, who will celebrate his 36th birthday next month, concluded a remarkable 25-year association with German giants Bayern Munich at the end of last season. His tenure at the Bavarian club was nothing short of legendary, highlighted by an astonishing 13 Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. Over 756 appearances for Bayern across all competitions, the versatile attacker netted 250 goals and provided 276 assists, cementing his place as one of the club’s all-time greats. His last appearance for Bayern was in the Club World Cup quarterfinals in the United States last month, where they lost to Paris Saint-Germain.
New Chapter in Vancouver: A “Statement Signing”
Müller has signed with the Whitecaps for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season. The deal includes an option for the club to retain him as a Designated Player for the 2026 season, a status that allows MLS teams to pay salaries beyond the league’s cap.
Expressing his immediate ambitions, Müller stated, “I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship. I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I’m coming to win.”
Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster hailed the signing as a “statement” and a “transformative moment” for the club and the city. “We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver,” Schuster added, emphasizing the significance of acquiring a player of Müller’s pedigree.
World Cup Winner Joins a Contending Whitecaps Side
Müller’s illustrious international career saw him make 131 appearances for Germany, scoring 45 goals, and playing a pivotal role in their 2014 FIFA World Cup triumph.
His arrival comes at a promising time for the Vancouver Whitecaps, who are currently second in the MLS Western Conference standings (as of August 6, 2025) and have impressed under first-year head coach Jesper Sørensen. They were also runners-up in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Müller is scheduled to arrive in Vancouver on August 13th. The Whitecaps’ next league match is an away fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, August 10th. While his debut date is not confirmed, fans will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see the German legend in action for his new club.
