Cincinnati, USA – World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to return to competitive action at the Cincinnati Open, where he will defend his title, following a strategic month-long break after his triumph at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old Italian believes his extended rest was the “right decision” and is ready to fire on all cylinders.
Grand Slam Success and Strategic Rest
Sinner has had a demanding yet highly successful 2025 season. In June, he battled rival Carlos Alcaraz in a marathon French Open final. He then avenged that loss at Wimbledon last month, securing his fourth Grand Slam title overall and his second major of a challenging year that also saw him serve a brief ban for an inadvertent doping offense.
Following his Wimbledon victory, Sinner opted to prioritize his physical and mental well-being, choosing a near month-long absence from the circuit. He will begin his Cincinnati campaign over the weekend after receiving a first-round bye.
Addressing Elbow Concerns
During a practice session with Christopher Eubanks on Wednesday, Sinner was seen sporting a protective sleeve on his right elbow, sparking some concern among observers. However, the Italian was quick to allay fears, explaining that the sleeve was purely for stability. “The elbow is good,” Sinner confirmed, adding that he uses it because he likes the feeling of increased stability during ball impact.
The Cincinnati Open serves as a crucial tune-up event for the upcoming US Open, which is scheduled to run from August 23 to September 7. Sinner will be looking to build momentum in Cincinnati as he targets further success in the final Grand Slam of the year.
